Project Based Learning (PBL) and PTO Bookfair Note

PBL (Project Based Learning)

Today the first graders have begun a new writing project.  This project combines social studies standards along with ELA (reading, writing, speaking and listening) standards to provide an authentic learning project.  The focus of this project is informational reading, writing to create biographies for our school staff.

I have worked in conjunction with the Howell Carnegie Library to acquire many books from libraries all over the state that are biographies for children.  We will be reading and discussing whet we notice biographies include.

We will then talk about a problem that occurred at our school.  Yesterday we had many 1st time guests at Hutchings for our Halloween parade.  Many people were not familiar with the staff or where the staff is located.  This is an authentic problem!  We as a first grade class will be working with what we will know about biographies and solving this problem for Hutchings.

In the coming weeks your child will be applying foundational skills in reading to informational texts. He or she will be practicing questioning skills with staff members as they conduct interviews.  I will keep you posted on our progress as we move through the process.

Please click the following photos to see 2 short biography videos we watched as an intro. today
