What is Target Time??
Many parents wonder what target time is and how I use this time in our classroom. Well... this is a scheduled block of time in our classroom where children may be pulled out to work on strengthening different skills. This allows me to focus on skills the we have already worked on in class with the students who are staying in class. I may extend a skill that we have learned about or I may need to do some remediation or reteaching during this time.
This past week we have been focusing in on the 5 Components of Reading. I used this one poem in different ways this week.
Monday : Phonemic Awareness - the children closed their eyes and listened for the rhyming words in the poem
Tuesday: Phonics- the children used their eyes to knowledge of sound to decode the words
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday: Fluency - The children got into groups and decided who would have each part. They then practiced reading and rereading and reading the poem some more! They also made puppets.
Friday we had our performance. Please Click on the photos below to see our 5 groups perform.

The children did a wonderful job! If you did not see your child it is because they were working on something outside of the classroom. They are working on the 5 components of reading during this time as well, so they are not missing any new instruction.
