The children have been so busy learning the format of our reading program - The Daily 6. Everyday I will meet with every child in our class for small group reading instruction. While I am meeting with the children the other children in the class are bust with different center "works". The children will each go to 6 centers a day (Meet With Teacher is one of their daily centers). I am attaching the bulletin board the shows some of the "works" for the Daily 6.
In addition to these 6 we will also rotate in math, science, drama, fine motor skills and building. This week this is what our "Task Board" looks like.
The top row of the "Task Board" are groups of students. Each child will then read the 1st picture under his or her group and go to that center work. The centers will average about 10 minutes each. I will use a timer to signal when it is time to switch to the next "Daily 6". The children will then move to the 2nd picture in the column.
We have been practicing this for the past 2 days. The children have been so responsible reading the task board and following the schedule!! I have been working with the students who meet with me on writing. I have noticed many students are struggling with handwriting letter formation so I wanted to take the small group time the past 2 days to work with the students on formation and placement of letters on the lines of a page.
The Daily 6 will run in our classroom from 10:50-11:50 each day. When parent volunteers come into class they will help students during this time.
Over the next 2 weeks I will be meeting individually with children to determine the proper reading level for instruction. Beginning Monday, October 3rd your child will have "Baggie Book" homework. (more info. to come)
The responsibility that I have seen this year has been wonderful! I am so proud of the students and can't wait to see how they grow as readers this year.
